Content & Curriculum

"The higher we go, the better we shall hear the voice of Christ.”

- Saint Pier Georgio Frassati

This summer at The Pines, we’re learning about the Universal Call to Holiness and how we are all called to be saints.

  • The week will begin with campers learning how we are all called to be saints and strive after the heighters of heaven. They are encouraged to begin living this call now at camp! A key focus is the communion of Saints, where the kids explore the lives of men and women who gave themselves fully to Christ, learning from their example how they too can pursue holiness. This includes an introduction to the life of Pier Giorgio Frassati as a model of joyful faith and devotion.

In Morning Prayer, they reflect on Exodus 3:1–13, the call of Moses, helping them understand how God calls ordinary people to extraordinary missions.

During Power Club, they focus more deeply on the life and witness of Pier Giorgio Frassati, and in God Sightings they take time to notice and reflect on how God has been present throughout their day.

Additional supporting Scripture and teachings include Catechism 2013 and Jeremiah 1:7.

  • Campers learn how Jesus wants to encounter them in every area of their life. They can encounter Him in the Sacraments, daily activities, in conversations with friends, and in the beauty of creation. When we look at the communion of Saints, we see that many of them became saints together, reminding us that our friendships can help lead us to heaven.

In the men’s and women’s sessions, students go deeper into how to form healthy friendships and live lives oriented toward heaven. They are also learning that striving for sanctity happens in the ordinary moments of everyday life. Far from being boring, living as a Catholic is a joyful and full life where Jesus is present in everything.

In Morning Prayer, campers reflect on 2 Samuel 6:12–15, where David dances before the Lord, learning that life is meant to be lived with joy and that Jesus desires them to share in that joy.

In Power Club, they explore holy friendships and missionary partnerships through saints like St. Benedict and St. Scholastica, St. Francis and St. Clare, St. Paul and Barnabas, and others, along with the life of Pier Giorgio Frassati, showing how holiness is lived in friendship, prayer, work, and play.

In God Sightings, campers reflect on where God was present throughout the day, with encouragement to pray in unexpected places and ways.

  • Campers will dive into the topic of how we grow in holiness through our relationship with the Lord. As Catholics, we believe the Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith, and receiving the Sacraments helps us grow in holiness. There are many different ways to pray, including different forms of encountering God in daily life—such as seeing prayer through different “languages” of love, like receiving the Eucharist, reading Scripture, or expressing faith through action. The Jesus experienced at camp is the same Jesus available at home, so campers are encouraged to continue praying and receiving the Sacraments beyond camp.

In Morning Prayer, campers reflect on Luke 22:14–23, the Last Supper, where Jesus says “do this in remembrance of me,” emphasizing that prayer and the Sacraments are meant to continue in daily life, even after camp.

In Power Club, they learn from St. Clare of Assisi and St. Carlo Acutis, seeing how Clare lived a life centered on the Eucharist and how Carlo shared his love for the Eucharist and Eucharistic miracles through modern means. They also connect this to Pier Giorgio Frassati’s devotion to daily Mass and the Eucharist.

In God Sightings, campers recap the day by noticing where God has been present.

Additional resources include Catechism 2562 and serve as a lead-in to Adoration.

  • Campers explore how it is necessary for us to share our faith, and we can do this through the way we love those around us. We are called to love God and love our neighbor as ourselves, and the Works of Mercy give practical ways to live out this call in daily life.

In Morning Prayer, campers reflect on 1 Corinthians 13 and the meaning of true love, including the verse that was also a favorite of Pier Giorgio Frassati, who kept it with him in his pocket.

In Power Club, they learn from St. Damian of Molokai and St. Mother Teresa, along with the example of Frassati’s generosity, including stories such as giving away his shoes as a child and his witness of self-giving love.

In God Sightings, campers recap the day by noticing where God has been present.

Additional resources include CCC 1822–1823 and CCC 826.

  • To end the week, campers learn how, in order to reach the heights of heaven, our lives require boldness, because the journey is not easy. Living boldly means moving confidently toward heaven, even when fears or difficulties arise. The Saints give powerful examples of what it looks like to live with boldness in every walk of life.

In Morning Prayer, campers reflect on Hebrews 12:1 and the image of the “cloud of witnesses,” learning that they are called to run the race of faith with perseverance.

In the commissioning, they are reminded of all the saints they have learned about throughout the week as examples of holiness. They also reflect on Pier Giorgio Frassati, who lived boldly in his faith even when it went against his family’s expectations and the norms of his culture.
